Despite 5 years of Toastmasters, I used to struggle speaking and presenting at work.
I was nervous and lacked the impact I wanted.
I wasn’t short on preparation.
I’d stay up until 2 or 3am the night before.
And it wasn’t a lack of expertise.
People valued my work. But when it came time to speak, I struggled to be clear, concise, impactful as well as confident.
What I realized was this:
I needed to learn how to communicate in the business world.
Business communication isn't keynote speaking or voice coaching. This is learning to show up prepared in a time crunch and deliver valuable information quickly and confidently.
During my 12 years at Coca-Cola, I was always slammed with work, so I built a simple, repeatable system to prepare business content quickly and effectively that delivered value when I spoke and presented.
So whether it was project updates, leading meetings, or executive presentations, I was confident I could deliver valuable information for the audience.
Now the tricky part... for a long time, I was capable, but not confident. I would struggle with nerves every time in front of executives. (Heart race... red face... )
Then I learned the secret that what was driving my nerves...
And it wasn't my lack of preparation.
It wasn't my fear of failure.
It wasn't my fear of judgement.
Once I finally understood it, I could manage my nerves in a way that showed up as more confidence.
The result of the secret was more clarity, confidence and impactful communication to executives. (It definitely was not perfect speaking.)
The interesting part... I'm a detail oriented data analytics guy known for getting buy-in on his ideas due to his presenting skills!
I sold in initiatives.
Executives adopted my recommendations. I became more influential and trusted to lead.
